Use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of muscle injuries occurred after sport trauma: evidence synthesis

Abstract

Introduction: It has been suggested that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) can be used in the recovery of musculoskeletal injuries, especially those with sports practice. Aim: To perform a literature review in order to show the results related to the use of HBO in the treatment of muscle injuries due to sports. Method: A selection of studies was carried out in the PUBMED database, maintained by the National Institute of Health, from United States, with basis this search strategy: [(oxygen therapy [title] OR oxygen therapy [title] OR "oxygen therapy" [title] OR "oxygen therapy" [title] OR "hyperbaric oxygen" [title])] AND musc* [title] AND sport*. Results: After the search, 12 articles adequately met the inclusion criteria. Evidence Synthesis: Human studies have shown that HBO was not effective in the treatment of muscle injuries induced by exercise, in the treatment of late muscle pain, or in recovery after eccentric exercises that induced temporary muscle pain. In this sense, it also requires controlled, multicenter and large-scale studies involving humans to ensure that there are possible related beneficial effects with the use of HBO in the repair of musculoskeletal injuries.
